Understanding Oneself

We know that all of us possess knowledge of the martial arts. Yet, mere knowledge causes many people to be puffed up - to bear themselves loftily and be proud; but love that is affection and goodwill and benevolence edifies and builds up, and encourages one to grow to his full stature.

If anyone imagines that he has come to know and understand much, and does so without love of his fellow man, he does not yet perceive and recognize and understand as strongly and clearly, nor has he become as intimately acquainted with anything as he ought, or that which is necessary. Our goals must be different, and of higher value, and have a higher purpose than others who seek to satisfy their own desires.

Scripture says: For it is written, I will baffle and render useless and destroy the learning of the learned, and the philosophy of the philosophers, and the cleverness of the clever, and the discernment of the discerning. Where is the wise man - the philosopher? Where is the scribe – the scholar? Where is the investigator - the logician and the debater of this present time and age?

Has not God shown us the nonsense and the folly of this world’s wisdom? To really achieve success you must begin to determine how you can help others to grow, for while others grow, you will grow also. If you have a pure heart and teach with honor, you will accomplish more than you ever imagined. Romans, chapter 12 states: Love one another with brotherly affection, as members of one family, giving precedence and showing honor to one another. Share other’s joy, rejoicing with those that rejoice, and share others grief, weeping with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, snobbish or high minded, but readily adjust yourself, and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never over-estimate yourself, or be wise in your own conceits. Repay no one evil for evil but, take thought for what is honest, proper and noble - aiming to be above reproach - in the sight of everyone.

If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not let yourself be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. The more you do for others, the more others will do for you. This interaction creates a momentum that cascades and magnifies into an awesome position that we call power. Those in power rule and create the customs, laws and rules that we live by. What is power and what is its ultimate aim?
